No matter what the rest of the world may be thinking about relations with Russia right now, the Bank of Portugal is all for celebrating the fact that this year’s football World Cup is going ahead in the eastern European nation. It has created a special commemorative coin, which will go on sale next week.
The €2.5 coin is not for general circulation, and cannot be used as currency. It is solely for collection.
100,000 examples are being issued and they will go on sale in “various credit institutions and treasuries”, reports ECO online.
The design involves one side with a “composition of balls, the national coat of arms and the value of the coin, above larger letters proclaiming: 2018 FIFA World Cup RUSSIA, and the other with another compilation of balls (slightly larger) and the figure of a footballer looking very much like he is performing a dance movement. According to the blurb, this is a figure “in the position of kicking the ball with his foot”. Also included on this side are the words, Portugal 2018 and Campeonato do Mundo da FIFA”.
The coins will be released for sale next Thursday.
