Black Friday brings major discounts to Portimão shopping streets

Portimão's traditional shopping streets will be offering discounts of up to 50%

Portimão’s traditional shopping streets will be marking Black Friday with stores offering discounts of up to 50% between November 24 and 29.

The campaign aims to push shoppers back into local stores, giving them an opportunity to get their Christmas shopping done early while benefitting from great deals.

From clothes, shoes and accessories to crafts and regional products, participating businesses promise a wide range of deals, all while encouraging shoppers to support local stores instead of turning to big chains.

Organisers say the campaign is designed not only to help residents score holiday bargains but also to give a much-needed boost to small businesses heading into the festive season. For many shops, it’s a rare moment to showcase what they offer, and keep the town centre buzzing.

This year’s Black Friday is part of the newly launched ‘Comércio do Centro Portimão’ brand, which aims to inject more life into local retail through various initiatives. The event is organised by the Portimão Association of Commerce and Services, with support from the municipal and parish councils of Portimão.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a major shopping day that originated in the United States and traditionally takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, with retailers offering steep discounts to attract large crowds. The name “Black Friday” became popular because the surge in sales often pushed stores “into the black,” meaning they moved from losses to profit.

In recent years, Black Friday has become a global retail event, adopted by countries far beyond the US. Both physical shops and online retailers use the occasion to launch promotions, limited-time deals, and early holiday sales.

Other variations have since grown in popularity, such as Cyber Monday –the online retail counterpart to Black Friday.
