Girlfriend ‘who cannot swim’ treated in hospital
In another very negative story involving British tourists in Portugal, a 60-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder/ domestic violence, after being seen throwing his girlfriend, who he apparently knew well could not swim, overboard the yacht they were both traveling in, close to Oeiras (Lisbon) on the river Tejo.
Had the incident not been witnessed by people onboard a boat in the vicinity, it is very possible the girlfriend will have drowned.
Reports describe the pair ‘arguing on board’, and the man then allegedly throwing the woman overboard before “fleeing” in his boat.
Eye-witnesses who rushed to the woman’s aid have stressed that her ‘partner’s’ actions appeared ‘intentional’.
With the woman able to confirm everything that happened to authorities, maritime police quickly caught up with her so-called partner, and he is now in police custody.
British press reports say the boat – ‘Mariner’ – has been impounded, and the man faces charges of around €1000 per month for its berthing in Oeiras marina, while he is being investigated for suspicions of attempted murder and repeated incidents of domestic violence against the woman, with whom he had been travelling for at least a year.
No names have yet emerged. It is believed both the man and the woman are British. ND
