Climáximo activist delays Porto-Lisbon flight

Group has already pre-publicised “peaceful airport disruption on June 1”

A TAP flight connecting Porto to Lisbon suffered a 20-minute delay this morning when a Climáximo activist refused to take his seat, protesting against short-haul flights, which he described as “climate bombs.”

In a statement released by the group, short-haul flights emit “tons of carbon dioxide into the air of our country, on a route with road and rail alternatives with comparable times and costs, compromising the present and future of the people we love the most.”

Francisco Siqueira, the spokesperson for this protest, labelled aviation as the “fastest and most unjust way to burn the planet” stressing that “addressing the climate crisis is still not an electoral issue”, a week from the latest round of legislative elections.

He also criticised the “consent of all parties to the decision to build a new airport amidst a climate crisis.

“It is necessary to build popular power to tackle the climate crisis, for the right to the city, a habitable country for all, free public transport for the people, a reduction in aviation to near zero by 2030, and not one more project that increases emissions – such as airport expansion and the creation of new airports,” he said.

In the same communiqué, Climáximo referred to its protest ‘Stop the Planes’ scheduled for June 1 at Lisbon’s airport, with a meeting point at 3pm at Alameda D. Afonso Henriques.

The idea of this protest, pre-announced in January, is to “disrupt the normal functioning” of the already over-stretched airport – thus anyone with any flight plans involving Lisbon airport on June 1 may need to rethink them. ND
