Public tenders to purchase the homes will soon open
Demolitions have begun at the site of the former lithography printing facility in Olhão to make way for a major housing project that will deliver over 300 affordable units in the Algarve town.
The development will include 288 residential units, 30 commercial spaces and 500 parking spots, the municipal council announced in a statement.
The land was purchased by the council in December 2021 for nearly €3.2 million. Now, the goal is to offer homes at controlled prices, such as two-bedroom apartments starting at €155,000 and three-bedrooms at €185,000.
“Only this way can young families afford a home and build a happy life here,” said mayor António Pina. He added that public tenders to purchase the homes will soon open through municipal company Fesnima.
The new development, located on Avenida Sporting Clube Olhanense, is also part of a wider urban plan. The area will serve as a future transport hub, near the train station and the upcoming Algarve Central BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) line.
“A dynamic and prosperous municipality needs the right conditions to retain its population, especially younger generations,” said Pina, adding that this investment offers real opportunities for families to own homes at prices that match their budgets.
The project is part of Olhão’s broader housing and affordable rental strategy, supported by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Says the council, it aims to meet the needs of low- and middle-income families, ensuring access to dignified housing for all in the years to come.
