Dear Editor,
The article ‘Church hall controversy’ (May 31, 2013 edition) is spot on. The building has taken away fantastic views for the surrounding properties and, more importantly, as you walk along the main road where the bus leaves Luz, you have lost the most beautiful view of the sea!
The building is totally wrong. I have no loss as I live just outside Luz, but it was wrong to develop without consulting residents locally and a public opinion. How often will it be actually used?
As a former British construction professional of over 33 years, this building, if there was a need, could have been a side addition between the church and Chaplin’s restaurant and tastefully done so as not to have ruined the look of our magnificent church (I attend every Sunday to the Anglican service and participate in crucial fundraising events) – that would have been a better place and added to the facility and no loss of anyone’s individual outlook and no loss of sea views from the main road for tourists who visit our village.
The authorities need to wake up and listen to local views and not be so arrogant in what they want to do and just do it.
I would say you should see this building now it’s more advanced and see what a sad impact it’s had, and help the Câmara wake up and see what their decisions today do for the centuries to come…
Have a look and see how sad it really really is. Money would have been better spent in other areas and a smaller single storey hall added to the church.
