Foreign TVDE driver arrested for attempted kidnap

Terrified 32-year-old passenger, also foreign, exited vehicle on A5 motorway

A TVDE driver (working for a ride-hailing app) has been arrested by PJ judicial police on suspicion of trying to abduct his 32-year-old passenger.

The young woman contracted the driver’s services after a night out with a male friend in Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré district.

In a statement, the PJ has explained that everything went well while the woman was accompanied in the vehicle by her male friend. But when the friend was delivered to his destination – and she was hoping to be driven to her’s – everything changed.

“The suspect altered the contracted journey and touched the woman’s body, all against her will”, said the statement, adding that the young woman “suffered a panic attack, and ended up exiting the vehicle as it was in motion, on the A5 (motorway), thus impeding the suspect from continuing with his criminal conduct”.

As Lusa news agency has confirmed, both the driver and alleged victim are foreigners.

Issues with foreign TVDE drivers are nothing new. What is new is the government’s resolve to deal much more strictly with criminality among foreign residents.

The 43-year-old, for now, has been bound to report daily to police; he has been prohibited from working as a TVDE driver and from contacting the victim.
