Man brutally attacked one of his neighbours in the head with a stone, causing serious injuries, according to PJ police
A Spanish citizen on the run has been arrested in Bensafrim, near Lagos, by the Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
His alleged crimes date back to 2018, in the province of Cáceres, where the man become involved in a violent dispute with his neighbours. He reportedly threatened to kill several people and assaulted others – including one brutal attack in which he struck a victim in the head with a stone, causing serious injuries.
The aggression didn’t stop there. The man also used social media to issue threats against judges and members of Spain’s Guardia Civil, PJ police say in a statement.
He was sentenced to four years and five months in prison but escaped custody during a temporary release and vanished — until today. Authorities believe he had been hiding in southern Portugal ever since.
The 45-year-old man was arrested by PJ officers from the Portimão Criminal Investigation Department, acting on a European Arrest Warrant and a European Investigation Order issued by Spanish authorities.
The man will now appear before the Évora Court of Appeal as proceedings begin for his extradition back to Spain.
