GNR out in force on roads, stopping cars and goods vehicles

General inspection operation lasts till Sunday

Portugal’s GNR police will be out in force on the nation’s roads this week as the bad weather gives way to at least a week’s respite from rain.

The “general inspection operation of heavy goods and passenger transport vehicles” will last until Sunday, the force has said in a statement.

According to the text, the purpose of the exercise is “to ensure compliance with European legislation, safety conditions in the transport of people and goods, and the detection of infractions with a view to a safer road environment”, preventing “accidents.”

“This operation takes place within the framework of the European Road Police Network (RoadPol), an organisation established by the traffic police of Europe,” reads the statement, highlighting that the GNR has “four priority areas of action in the context of road safety: roads, vehicles, users and speed.”

Tragedies on the nation’s roads nonetheless continue – the latest being an accident involving a bus and two cars last Friday early evening which caused two deaths on the EN (national road) 256, in São Manços, Évora, with another five people injured, three of them seriously.

The dead were the 22-year-old driver of one of the cars, and a one year old baby.
