GNR ‘Operation Easter’ road-safety campaign begins today

Appeal to drivers: “Be careful: enjoy holidays in safety”

GNR’s ‘Operation Easter 2026’ begins today with roadside checks in evidence on the busiest roads, and the seasonal appeal to drivers to “drive carefully, to get through the festive period in safety”.

Extra police control over major roads will continue until Monday, with the GNR also increasing its presence in areas hosting Easter events.

The sad reality of Portugal is that every seasonal holiday seems to bring ‘extra accidents’. Thus the appeal today for drivers to be “careful, cautious” and adopt ‘defensive driving’.

In a statement, the GNR says it will be on the look-out for dangerous/ incorrect manoeuvres, speed, the use of mobile phones at the wheel, and drivers under the influence of alcohol and/ or drugs.

Roadside checks will also be focused on assessing whether seatbelts/ child car-seats are correctly fastened.

While the GNR is active in non-urban areas, PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) police will be running its Easter campaign, under the slogan: “Polícia Sempre Presente”, in city and town areas, at the same time beefing its contingent at the country’s airports.
