GNR police are stepping up road checks across the Algarve as thousands of fans are expected for this weekend’s Superbike World Championship race in Portimão.
Dubbed “Moto I”, the operation will run from Thursday to Sunday (March 26-29) and will focus on the Algarve International Circuit and the main access roads to the racetrack, where traffic is expected to surge, especially from motorcyclists travelling to the event.
According to the GNR, the goal is to keep both spectators and participants safe while ensuring traffic flows as smoothly as possible during one of the Algarve’s busiest motorsport weekends.
The championship itself runs from March 27 to 29 in Portimão and is expected to draw large crowds. As a result, authorities warn of potential traffic congestion and delays, particularly at peak times and on key routes.
In a special warning ahead of the event, the military police force warns that motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable groups on the road. Between 2020 and 2025, they accounted for around 27% of road deaths, as well as a significant share of serious and minor injuries. In 2025 alone, more than 8,000 motorcycle-related accidents were recorded, resulting in 114 fatalities.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care – particularly motorcyclists – by wearing helmets, keeping a safe distance, adjusting speed to conditions and avoiding risky manoeuvres. Authorities are also warning against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and highlighting the importance of proper vehicle maintenance.
