Government spends €11,500 on make-up and hair

Direct contract signed with GlitterGlobe - Leiria firm of less than a year

Following on from the ‘expensive purchase’ of eight points of access to Sport TV for government departments (later reduced to just two), comes another ‘costly surprise’ from a government ostensibly focused on reducing unnecessary expenses: an €11,500 contract to secure the services of ‘make-up and hairdressing’.

What it means, says Correio da Manhã today (and now widely being repeated elsewhere) is that “every time an element of government prepares to talk to journalists, €230.40 will be leaving public coffers”.

The deal, signed last Thursday, cost a total of €11,520 (plus IVA) and has the objective of “guaranteeing the quality of the image” of ministers and secretaries of state at press conferences.

A direct contract (meaning no other contenders were sought), it allows for 50 ‘services’ during the year, which can take up to four members of government and which will be given weekly (either in Lisbon, or elsewhere).

The services involve make-up for both men and women, and hairdressing services for the latter.

The contracted company, GlitterGlobe – based in Leiria – is described by Esquerda.net as having been in existence for ‘less than a year’.

SIC Notícias adds that the “executive explains that it opted for a direct contract because the value was less than €20,000.
