Iranians in Lisbon celebrate death of ‘supreme leader’

Call for return of last Shah’s eldest son, Reza Pahlavi

Dozens of Iranians gathered today in front of the Iranian embassy in Lisbon to celebrate the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and to call for the return of the last Shah’s eldest son, Reza Pahlavi.

Participants in the event, promoted by the Iranian community residing in Portugal, displayed Iranian flags with the golden Lion and Sun – the flag before the current one of the Islamic Republic, which adopted a stylised red tulip (as a symbol of Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein, the grandson of Muhammad).

Flags of the United States and Israel were also visible at the gathering.

Yesterday, more than 30 Iranians gathered to lay flowers at the American and Israeli embassies in Lisbon as a sign of gratitude for the attacks that began yesterday (and which have subsequently unleashed a salvo of retaliation from Iran against other countries in the region)

Israel and the United States launched their ‘vast military operation’ against Iran – in the middle of negotiations over Iran’s perceived nuclear threat – ostensibly because negotiations were not moving along swiftly enough. US President Donald Trump has since indicated that the idea is to overthrow the Iranian regime. He has urged the Iranian people to take over their government “when we are finished” (“this will be probably your only chance for generations”). How this seizing of power by the ‘great Iranian people’ will happen – particularly now that the wider region is plunged into uncertainty, with missiles flying and air space closed – is not immediately clear.
