A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Portimão by PJ criminal police following a violent altercation that left another man fighting for his life.
The incident took place on Monday, October 13, when the suspect and the 40-year-old victim were reportedly drinking outside a local shop. According to the PJ’s Criminal Investigation Department in Portimão, what began as a heated argument over trivial matters quickly took a more serious turn, with both men exchanging insults.
Police said the suspect then reacted “in a disproportionate and inappropriate manner,” pulling a utility knife from his pocket and slashing the victim across the left side of his neck. The attack caused a deep cut around 25 centimetres long and 1.5 centimetres deep, which only narrowly avoided being fatal thanks to swift emergency medical care.
The victim underwent urgent surgery and remains in intensive care, having been in “real danger of death,” investigators confirmed.
Detectives launched an immediate investigation, gathering crucial evidence that led to the suspect’s arrest on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder and possession of a prohibited weapon.
The man is expected to appear before a judicial hearing in the coming days, where a judge will determine the appropriate preventive measures.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (DIAP) of Portimão is overseeing the case.
