Mystery as empty coffin found on wasteground near main road

Pair of gloves and mask found alongside coffin

GNR police are investigating the discovery of an empty coffin on wasteground near the EN (national road) 103, between Braga and Póvoa de Lanhoso.

This does not appear to have been a ‘brand new coffin’ that had somehow ‘fallen off the back of a lorry’: it “was shut with two nails, one on either side”, reports SIC Notícias, and beside it was a pair of gloves and a mask (presumably surgical, not carnival).

It was only found because a passing driver pulled into the spot due to a problem with his car, and noticed the coffin, partially hidden by vegetation, explains local news outlet famaradio.tv.

According to Correio da Manhã, the wasteground is habitually used for fly-tipping.

Clearly, the question is what does this all mean? Various law enforcement agencies attended the scene when the coffin was found late yesterday morning, including the local ‘nucleus of criminal investigation’.

The coffin has since been removed, by a municipal truck. It is not clear to where it has been taken.
