The Algarve is set to take a leading role in the global equestrian scene with the reopening of the renovated Vilamoura Equestrian Centre, now in its final development phase and gearing up for a busy 2026 season of international events.
Positioning Portugal among the world’s premier destinations for show jumping, the upgraded venue will host 11 weeks of competition and mark the debut of the region’s first CSI5* — the highest level of show jumping competition, as classified by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI).
The Vilamoura Classic Tour will begin on February 24, 2026 with the Classic Tour I, consisting of three weeks of CSI3*, CSI1*, and young horse competitions. It will be followed by the Master Tour from March 17 to 22, featuring a CSI4*, before reaching its highlight: the first edition of the Vilamoura CSI5*, scheduled for March 24 to 29. This will be the first event of its level in Portugal since the CSI5* of Cascais, held six years ago.
The autumn calendar will continue with the Classic Tour II from October 20 to November 9, offering two weeks of CSI3* and one of CSI4*, while the Classic Tour III, from November 17 to December 6, will close the year with three additional weeks of international competitions.
The project results from a partnership between GRANDPRIX Events and the Arrow Global Group, owner of the Vilamoura complex and several local tourism infrastructures. Its stated goal is to turn Vilamoura into a global reference point for equestrian sport by combining high-quality facilities with the Algarve’s distinctive lifestyle and climate.
According to the organisers, “The Vilamoura Classic represents a new chapter for European show jumping and for Portugal in particular. We want this to be a destination where sport and quality of life are lived year-round.”
The upgraded centre will feature three new ebb-and-flow sand arenas, each exceeding 6,500m² and a large grass arena measuring 14,000 m². Additionally, key features of the upgrade include four undulate warm up arenas, Europe’s largest covered free-training arena exceeding 6,000m², and a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic will also be on-site. The enhancements also include over 1000 new fixed stables, three premium hospitality spots with a VIP space, a 3km horse path, and a 30,000m² grass free-training area in a natural reserve.
“These upgrades mean the Vilamoura Equestrian Centre will exceed the expectations of riders, horses, and spectators alike, offering an unparalleled equestrian experience as well as a prime sponsorship opportunity for local and international brands,” according to Vilamoura World, the resort’s master developer.
