The “Algarve for Palestine” platform is inviting citizens to join them on Thursday, August 14 for a “non-partisan demonstration, marching through the streets of Olhão and banging pots and pans to remind and call for an end to the ongoing deadly man-made famine in Gaza”.
The march will start at 7.30pm from the Ferry Boat Pier (Cais de Embarque, Avenida 5 de Outubro, 2A). This will be followed by a lecture entitled “From the Nakba to Genocide” by Shahd Wadi, at 9pm, at Associação Cultural República 14 (Avenida da República, 14). Shahd Wadi is a Palestinian writer, performer, curator, researcher, translator and author of the acclaimed poetry book “Chuva de Jasmim” (Caminho, 2025).
In a statement to the press this week, the “Algarve for Palestine” platform says:
“Following the murder of five more Palestinian journalists in Gaza on August 10, 2025, the number of journalists murdered by Israel since late 2023 now rises to at least 238 – a number incomparably higher than those of any other conflict or genocide in contemporary history. We want to raise awareness on Israel’s systematic silencing of Palestinian voices, blocking access to international media for the past 22 months to conceal the crimes against humanity perpetrated by its Zionist regime.
“Millions of people throughout the world are demonstrating, organising, and mobilising against the genocide and barbarity that unfolds before our eyes daily, without seeing adequate intervention from those responsible for upholding international law, that is completely ignored by the State of Israel, which continues, with impunity, the genocide in Gaza and Palestine.”
