New road to tackle Portimão traffic woes moves forward

The €6.4 million project will link the eastern and western parts of town

Portimão’s municipal council has announced a €6.4 million tender for the construction of the first phase of the V2 road, which aims to tackle the town’s growing traffic woes.

The launch of the tender was announced on Friday, June 13 in the government’s official gazette Diário da República.

The new road will link the busy Paul Harris avenue – one of the main entrance points to the town – to the Gil Vicente avenue near the Two Irmãos stadium, establishing a direct route between the eastern and western areas of the town. The goal is to facilitate access to Alvor, ease traffic pressure on the N125 national road and A22 motorway, reduce congestion on the town’s overloaded V6 avenue, and offer better travel conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, says the council.

The first phase of the project will extend Avenida Paul Harris to Avenida Gil Vicente and include a new roundabout near the Dois Irmãos stadium. According to the council, the new road will be “a modern route with two lanes in each direction, a central divider, and dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths.”

The overall budget for the first phase stands at €6,438,975.32 (excluding VAT), with a completion timeline of 600 days.

Proposals for the tender can be submitted until July 7.

This project, along with the construction of a new road linking the EN125 national road to the town’s Vale da Arrancada industrial area, is expected to ease traffic congestion in the town.

“These new roads will divert a lot of traffic away from the Cardosas roundabout, especially heavy vehicles, and the V6 avenue,” Portimão mayor Álvaro Bila said in an interview earlier this year.
