Portugal won eight medals at the 30th European Trampolining Championships held in Portimão, with the national federation describing the result as “very positive”.
Luís Arrais, president of the Portuguese Gymnastics Federation (FPG), said the competition was a success both in sporting and organisational terms.
“It was a very positive European championship for national gymnastics, not only in terms of organisation but also in terms of competition,” he said.
Portugal won one gold, two silver and five bronze medals, a result that, according to Arrais, “exceeded initial expectations”.
He highlighted the gold medal won by Vasco Peso in tumbling, describing it as “a dream result that we have been hoping for over many years”.
Arrais also pointed to the silver medals won by Catarina Nunes and Sofia Correia in synchronised trampolining, as well as Gabriel Albuquerque in individual trampolining, saying they “reflect the competitive consistency of Portuguese gymnasts”.
Portugal’s five bronze medals were won across several disciplines and categories. In double mini-trampoline, the senior men’s team of André Dias, Francisco José and Tiago Teixeira finished third with 21 points, followed by the women’s team of Alexandra Garcia, Beatriz Mendes and Matilde Oliveira, also in third place with 22 points. In individual trampoline, Diogo Abreu, Gabriel Albuquerque and Pedro Ferreira secured bronze in the men’s team event, while in tumbling, João Azinheira, João Saraiva and Vasco Peso also finished third. The final bronze medal came in the junior competition, where Inês Correia, Matilde Louro and Rafaela Rosa placed third in double mini-trampoline.
Although Portugal won fewer medals than at the 2024 edition in Guimarães, where it topped the medal table with 11, Arrais said the comparison should be seen in context.
“The fact that we had fewer medals compared to Guimarães is due to the circumstances of the competition,” he said, adding that “overall, this European championship was stronger than the one two years ago”.
The federation boss also said the results point to continued progress in the sport. “Gymnastics is growing in quality and these results give us strong prospects for the coming years,” he concluded.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also praised the team’s performance.
“The European Trampolining Championships ended with an excellent performance by Portuguese athletes,” he wrote on social media.
“Congratulations to all the athletes and to the organisers of this championship in Portimão,” he added.
