New Year’s Eve in Lisbon, Porto with “robust police presence”

No champagne allowed in Lisbon’s Terreiro do Paço …

Promising concerts from 9.30pm and a spectacular midnight firework display over Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon will be the destination of thousands on New Year’s Eve – and PSP police have stressed there will also be “a very robust security” presence.

Advice to those choosing the capital to see in the New Year is ‘park the car’ some way away (as many roads will be closed) – and use public transport to get to the riverside: the Metro will be closing at 1am but other public transports (buses/ ferries) are being reinforced.

Access into Terreiro do Paço “will have tight control” – and certain items (bottles of bubbly included) are ‘prohibited’.

The 10-minute firework display promises to be exceptional this year, “synchronized with 250 drones, creating an aerial choreography from various points of the riverfront”. One of the best places to experience the display will be Praça do Comércio, writes SIC – albeit other points like Cais de Sodré, Ribeira das Naus and Santa Apolónia will also offer good perspectives.

The main performer of the night is billed as rapper Plutonio (from 10.30pm).

Porto is billing its musical attractions as Portuguese band ‘Os Clã’. The city will also have a lot of streets closed to traffic, so again the advice is ‘use public transport’.

As far as security goes, Porto does not appear to be being quite so strict about things like champagne: people are allowed to toast the New Year in at the ‘centre’ of activities, Os Aliados, “but not with glasses”.

Porto’s differences from Lisbon are that concerts start at 10pm and will be complemented by a ‘multimedia show’ along with an 11-minute firework display.
