Nine-year-old boy dies, 14-year-old injured, after ‘playing with shotgun’ that ‘jammed’

Relative "tried to fix jam" with devastating consequences

A nine-year-old boy died, and a 14-year-old teenager was injured, yesterday afternoon following an alleged accidental shotgun discharge by a relative in a neighborhood of Setúbal, police sources have revealed.

The tragedy occurred in the Bela Vista neighborhood. According to police sources cited by Lusa, the two boys were allegedly “playing with a shotgun” and the weapon ‘allegedly jammed’.

“An adult, a relative of the victims, allegedly tried to resolve” the problem “and fired a shot that hit the children,” said the sources.

PJ police are investigating – because it is not at all clear whether the account passed to Lusa is correct.

SIC Notícias, for example, talks of the boys having ‘various gunshot wounds’ – and the incident potentially being connected to a feud between two families.

The situation has been further complicated by the detail that the PJ has said they are “taking steps to identify and locate the suspect who fired the shot”.

All that is clear is that the boys entered the A&E department of Setúbal’s São Bernardo Hospital with gunshot wounds late yesterday afternoon.

“Both victims were in critical and reserved condition,” said a police source, adding that the 14-year-old was transferred to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital, while the younger boy died at São Bernardo Hospital.
