Four people died this afternoon in a three car pile-up on the IC1 road (running between northern Portugal and the Algarve) at Santiago do Cacém (Setúbal district).
Initial reports point to the victims as being all from the same family, and German.
SIC Notícias describes a man, aged 49, a woman, aged 50, and two children, aged 13 and 15.
The victims were all travelling in the same car.
The accident appears to have been caused by another vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road.
This other vehicle hit the car carrying the German family head-on, writes SIC. The driver of the other vehicle was ‘seriously injured’. He has been transported by helicopter to Lisbon’s Santa Maria hospital.
The occupants of a third car also involved managed to escape the carnage unharmed.
The alert over this tragedy went out shortly after 3pm today.
The IC1 was closed off in both directions for some time afterwards as police and medical emergency personnel responded.
