PM announces more support for Ukraine after meeting President Zelenskyy in Copenhagen

Portugal will give Ukraine at least another €220 million in coming year

Portugal’s PM Luís Montenegro met with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine in Copenhagen today, and pledged “support of at least €220 million” to the war-ravaged country in the coming year.

“The meeting I have just had with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was, once again, productive. We had the occasion to exchange points of view on the process of Ukraine’s adhesion to the European Union” as well as discuss “military, logistical, political and also the financial support that Portugal has given and will continue to give in the coming year”, he told reporters on the sidelines of the annual conference of the European Political Community underway in Denmark.

“We are talking about support of at least €220 million,” the prime minister added, indicating that this support could be “the acquisition of military equipment and/ or the provision of logistical equipment necessary to maintain Ukraine’s military forces.”

Mr Montenegro added that Ukraine’s leader ‘thanked’ him for asking Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting in Beijing for support in the drive for peace, ‘due to his close relationship’ with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It was only a few weeks ago that the Portuguese PM managed to put this word for Ukraine into the first three minutes (the only minutes recorded by the press) of his meeting with the Chinese president. Whether President Xi responded, and if so, how, has never been divulged.

The war in Ukraine continues in spite of a flurry of diplomatic manoeuvres towards a peace deal – and although Russia continues to relentlessly bombard the country with drones and missiles, strategically it is far from its objectives, making only incremental gains at the cost of thousands of soldiers’ lives.

Meanwhile, the west continues to stand firm in its unwavering support for Ukraine, as shown today by Portugal.
