The Socialist Party (PS) has retained control of Portimão, a borough it has ruled since the end of Portugal’s Estado Novo regime (1974).
In Sunday’s local election, current mayor Álvaro Bila (PS) came out on top with 41.19% of votes (10,856), ahead of CHEGA which finished second with 27.38% (7,216) and the right-wing coalition of PSD-CDS-IL, third with 23.35% (6,154).
Bila was unable to secure a majority and will rule with four councillors against CHEGA’s three and PSD-CDS-IL’s two.
