Council warns against “fake information” on social media
The municipal council of Portimão has vehemently denied rumours that the town’s CCTV surveillance cameras are not working.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the local authority said the allegation stems from an old image dating back to 2017 – five years before the system even went live – being circulated to support the misleading claim.
“This claim, aside from being completely false, is especially irresponsible and serious for creating an unjustified feeling of insecurity among residents,” the council said, adding that it also brings into question a “fundamental tool for public safety in Portimão”.
The video surveillance system has been fully operational since November 2022, playing a “key role” in preventing crime and supporting police investigations, the council said. Meanwhile, Portimão is already moving forward with plans to expand camera coverage to the historic downtown area, marking this as a top priority.
“As we consider this misinformation an attack on the trust of citizens, we call on group administrators and moderators where this post has been shared to be responsible and active in fighting fake news,” the council said.
The local council also expressed its commitment to transparency and public safety, promising to speak out whenever misinformation threatens the well-being of the community.
