Portimão lights up with new-look ‘Christmas Dream’

The town has prepared 37 days of Christmas-themed entertainment

Portimão is gearing up to switch on the Christmas lights and reopen its winter wonderland as the town’s Christmas Dream (Sonho de Natal) returns from December 1 to January 6, this year with a fresh layout and new festive areas.

The season officially begins on Monday, December 1 with the arrival of Santa Claus, one of the most awaited moments for local children, coinciding with the switch-on of decorative lighting across roughly 50 locations. The event marks the start of 37 days of family-friendly Christmas entertainment, from ice skating to workshops, shows and the traditional life-size nativity scene at Largo da Mó.

A major change this year is the reorganisation of the town’s Christmas hubs. Santa’s House and the Ice Rink will now be located at Praça da República (also known as Alameda).

Down by the river, the Mercadinho de Natal moves to the old Lota car park, forming a new festive corridor along the water with Santa’s Factory and a renewed Christmas Stage. The stage, set inside a heated marquee, will host daily performances featuring music, dance, circus arts, theatre, magic and puppetry. Around 500 artists will take part, most of them from Portimão, including local schools and community groups. Santa’s Factory is also getting a major upgrade with a new indoor adventure area featuring an aerial obstacle course and multiple play zones tailored to different ages. The space continues to offer storytelling sessions, creative workshops and festive activities like biscuit-making and gift-wrapping techniques.

Nearby, Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes will be fully decorated and positioned as a scenic backdrop for festive family photos, once again using the river as its natural stage.

Finally, the much-loved life-size nativity scene will return to Largo da Mó, while the Christmas Train will shuttle between the Alameda and the riverside, linking the various festive hubs. The town’s main streets, as well as the centres of Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande, will also host themed Christmas parades on Saturdays and public holidays throughout December.
