Portugal’s emergency response systems explained

Portimão Arena is again hosting ALGARSAFE’18, the international civil protection and relief fair, from May 24 to 26, featuring a “unique programme” covering all security and safety issues.

Around 100 exhibitors and entities are taking part, over 50 activities are already scheduled, and organisers expect around 10,000 people to attend over the three days. The fair is also directed at families, and there will be plenty for children to see and learn.

This will be the largest fair of its type south of the River Tagus, involving the organisations of public safety and civil protection services, safety and health agents, as well as members of the rescue operations.

The fair is an initiative by the Portimão council and the local firefighters (Bombeiros de Portimão), supported by the municipal civil protection, the parish council, the Portuguese Safety Association (APSEI), the Portuguese Firefighters League, the National School of Firefighters and Safe Communities Portugal.

Covering a 4,000sqm indoor space, the fair will accommodate providers and suppliers of goods and services in the areas of security and safety, civil protection agents, and the integrated system of operations of protection and relief at national level.

An outdoor area covering 8,000sqm will be the stage for demonstrations of emergency vehicles and equipment, operational exercises, workshops and activities.

The first day will start at 9am with a guided visit of the fair followed by the seminar “Emergency Response in Portugal”, organised by the municipal civil protection service and Safe Communities Portugal.

With presentations by officials and agents of the integrated protection and relief operations system and the integrated medical emergency system, the seminar, presented in English, aims to provide an opportunity for foreign citizens interested in understanding how response systems within the scope of civil protection work, as well as clarifying any doubts about the rules and procedures to be adopted in emergency situations.

Free registration for the seminar should be done via email at eventos@ahbvp.pt

The full three-day programme can be downloaded in PDF format from the “civil protection page” on the Safe Communities Portugal website (www.safecommunitiesportugal.com).
