President Marcelo confronted by protester over Palestine during Lisbon Book Fair visit

“Don’t grab me by the neck,” protester said as president Marcelo attempted to engage her in conversation

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was confronted over Palestine today by a protester during his visit to the opening of the 95th Lisbon Book Fair, who accused him and the Portuguese government of inaction regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The tense moment unfolded publicly in front of TV cameras when the woman approached the president holding a sign reading “Há genocídio da Palestina” (“There is genocide in Palestine”) and criticised Portuguese top officials for failing to act.

“There’s a protest today at 6pm at (Praça Luís de) Camões. I’m asking everyone who cares, especially about children, to show up. It’s really important,” she said, using the moment to urge public support.

President Marcelo attempted to respond and engage in conversation by putting his hand on the back of her neck. However, the protester asked him not to touch her, retorting “Don’t grab me by the neck”.

She walked away shortly after the brief interaction, leaving Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to address reporters nearby.

The president explained that Portugal had recently shifted its voting position at the United Nations to support Palestinian recognition as a full member. He also reiterated that Portugal is aligned with other European states in seeking a coordinated approach.

“Portugal – and I’ve said this several times – through the President, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, is working with other European countries on forming a joint position on this matter,” Marcelo stated.

The incident took place after another 27 people were killed in Gaza by Israeli attacks on Tuesday, with the total death toll said to surpass 54,000 since the start of the conflict in October 2023.
