Brazilian president visits Portugal on April 21

This will be first meeting between Lula da Silva and Portugal’s President Seguro

Brazil’s president Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit Portugal on April 21, a source from the Brazilian presidency has confirmed.

The source said the president expects to meet Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and Portugal’s president, António José Seguro.

If all goes as outlined, this will be the first meeting between António José Seguro and the Brazilian left-wing leader. President Lula could not attend the inauguration of António José Seguro last month because he had a meeting scheduled with South Africa’s president, a partner in the group of emerging economies known as BRICS (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

Lula da Silva and Luís Montenegro have already met on at least two occasions in Brazil, last year. They met on February 19, in Brasilia during the 14th Brazil-Portugal Summit and again in November in Belém do Pará, during the COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference.

The same source tells Lusa that President Lula will visit Spain between April 16 and 18, following an invitation from Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez. He plans a bilateral visit on April 17, and will attend the 4th high-level meeting of the “In Defence of Democracy” initiative on April 18, in Barcelona.
