PSP police search headquarters of nurses syndicate in Porto

Investigation understood to centre on tenure of former president Pedro Costa

PSP police are this morning conducting searches at the headquarters of the Syndicate of Nurses, in Porto.

Agents are accompanied by magistrates of DIAP (the department of investigation and penal action) and of the Court of Criminal Instruction.

The target of this investigation, says SIC, is former syndicate president Pedro Costa.

According to ‘Jornal de Notícias’, public prosecutors suspect that Costa used syndicate money for his private benefit. At stake is the crime of abuse of trust.

In April, RTP (state broadcaster) released a report on these suspicions, with “documents showing that Pedro Costa had made personal purchases and paid for lunches, dinners and even family holidays with the union’s debit card, amounting to €40,000”, SIC adds.
