PSP ‘swoop on gun crime’ underway in Lisbon neighbourhoods

Five arrests so far; operation set to continue for ‘few more hours’

Five men have been arrested so far in a PSP police swoop on gun crime in outlying Lisbon neighbourhoods.

The operation set to continue into the early afternoon has so far apprehended at least four shotguns, a hand gun, and small doses of hashish.

The men arrested, aged between 20 and 40, are mostly known to police, and/ or have criminal records.

The operation began early morning (7am), and involves around 100 members of the criminal investigation department, public order teams and the Special Police Unit, a source at the scene has said – while a PSP statement explains that the operation “was prompted by several incidents involving the use of weapons in these locations” (namely Alta de Lisboa, Ameixoeira and Ajuda).

While the operation continues, access to the three areas remains heavily restricted.
