Early this morning six firefighting aircraft were up in the air combatting the three fronts that developed all too quickly yesterday in the wildfire around Vinhais, Bragança.
By 9am there were over 400 firefighters in active combat. At time of writing that number had increased to 485 and was being backed up by another four firefighting aircraft.
The strategy is to get ahead of the fronts before the wind picks up. Yesterday, the wind was so strong that it ended up fanning flames to the point where some fronts reached over 4kms in length.
Early reports stressed the “difference” the first rounds of aircraft water-bombing seemed to be making.
This is a fire that began close to midday yesterday. At points during the afternoon it looked as if residences/ properties could be at risk, but so far damages have been restricted to land only.
