RIP Dirk Hinrichs – “Skip Bandele”, you will be missed

Portugal Resident mourns loss of long-time sports contributor

The Portugal Resident is mourning the loss of long-time sports contributor Dirk Hinrichs, best known to readers as Skip Bandele, who died early this Tuesday morning (May 20) at the HPA hospital in Alvor, Portimão.

The sad news was confirmed to the Resident this morning by a family source.

Dirk joined the Resident team in 2003 and for many years had been in charge of the Resident’s weekly reports on Portimonense, the local club he supported and followed year-round. He also wrote the popular column “Is it just me?”, sharing fascinating and often humorous titbits of his experiences living in the Algarve.

He was also a beloved member of Alvor’s foreign community, some even calling him “Mr. Alvor”, and had recently taken over the management of The Frog Bar. Dirk was also an active voice in the community, always willing to sound the alarm on matters or situations that he felt strongly about. He was also quick to give advice/tips on social media to tourists visiting the Algarve.

His funeral will take place on Monday, May 26 at the Albufeira crematorium, with a meet-up at 11.30am preceding a noon farewell.
