Faro is in Christmas mode after the municipality switched on its festive lights last Friday, November 21, with the tree at Praça da Liberdade (Pontinha) illuminated by local mayor António Miguel Pina.
However, the official celebrations will begin with the arrival of Santa Claus on Saturday, November 29. The special occasion is scheduled for 10.30am and will see the white-bearded gift-bearer arriving on a fire truck at Jardim Manuel Bívar as part of the celebrations of the 143rd anniversary of the Faro Sapadores fire brigade. The celebrations will continue in the format of a street parade leading to Santa’s House, which will be based at the old Martínez store on Rua Tenente Valdim and will open at 11.30am.
As in previous editions, Santa’s House will act as the beating heart of the festive entertainment, hosting several children’s activities.
Many other Christmas-themed events and activities will take place in downtown Faro until December 24, the municipal council says, from concerts to dance and theatre performances.
The full programme is due to be announced soon on the council’s website.
