Sardine festival brings delicious fish and top musical acts to Portimão

It may still be months away but Portimão’s sardine festival was one of the events promoted by mayoress Isilda Gomes at Lisbon’s BTL tourism fair last week.

The “Festival da Sardinha” is one of the Algarve’s main gastronomic events, famous for showcasing the “delicious simplicity” of the town’s “signature dish”, grilled sardines.

It will take place between August 1 and 5, with restaurants in the town centre and riverside serving the traditional chargrilled sardines with boiled potatoes and salad, as well as other gastronomic creations using the mighty fish.

During the festival, “top-class” musical acts will be performing at the town’s old fishing market, or “Lota”.

Angolan singer Matias Damásio will take the stage on the opening night.

A “local band”, still to be announced, will perform the following night, while on August 3 it will be Fado singer Raquel Tavares who will bring her distinctive voice to the riverside town.

Ana Bacalhau, lead singer of modern Fado/Pop group Deolinda, will be the musical guest on August 4 before the festival comes to a close the following night with a show by The Black Mamba, known for their unique take on blues, soul and funk music.

Other upcoming events
At BTL, Isilda Gomes also announced new events taking place in the borough this summer, such as the launch of the Pirate Week in Alvor in August and the Windsurfing World Championships that will be held for the first time in Portimão in September.
