Searches underway for two missing brothers swept out to sea in Leiria

Authorities resumed searches this Monday morning

Two Angolan brothers, aged 10 and 15, went missing on Sunday while swimming at Praia do Pedrógão in Leiria.

Searches began immediately after authorities were alerted at 5.25pm, launching a coordinated effort involving the Maritime Police from Nazaré and Figueira da Foz, volunteer firefighters from Leiria and Vieira de Leiria, and a range of sea and air support, including a rapid-response boat, two jet skis, a Navy vessel, and an Air Force aircraft. A team of divers was also mobilised to scour the area.

The search continued through the night as a Portuguese Navy corvette remained deployed offshore.

Operations resumed this Monday morning at 7am, with local firefighters rejoining the efforts at 9am.

The case is being overseen by the Captain of the Port and Local Commander of the Maritime Police of Nazaré, who is directing the multi-agency operation.

Meanwhile, the Maritime Police’s Psychology Unit has been dispatched to support the boys’ family.
