One of those uncanny ‘twists of fate’ has exposed a man cultivating cannabis in the middle of the forest near Pedrógão Grande: the fire that began on Saturday involved special GNR operatives who were dropped by helicopter into a ‘danger zone’, and discovered, by chance, the illegal plantation.
According to reports, the agents “continued with their mission of putting out flames”, but alerted colleagues at Pombal’s ‘nucleus of criminal investigation’ who visited the spot, on Sunday, once the fire had been extinguished, and arrested the landowner for ‘cultivating and trafficking drugs’.
As luck would have it, the plants all survived the fire, but have now been apprehended, writes Correio da Manhã.
Wildfires have a habit of ‘exposing’ illegal cannabis plantations: many growers take advantage of areas of wilderness in to cultivate little pockets, away from most people’s eyes.
