The new park is due to be completed by the end of this year
Marking a “historic moment” for the community of Vilamoura, the first tree of a new green park in the resort’s central area was planted yesterday (July 31).
The Parque Verde Arqº Paisagista Fernando Pessoa, whose name honours renowned Portuguese landscape architect Fernando Pessoa, is an initiative that aims to protect and enhance the natural heritage of Vilamoura’s central area.
The space, which covers approximately 4.5 hectares, will be “an example of urban sustainability, combining the preservation of green areas with sustainable mobility infrastructure, thus contributing to the sustainability of the urban centre”.
The public investment by Inframoura (Vilamoura Infrastructure Company) exceeds €500,000 and followed an application to the Algarve 2030 programme in the area of ‘action for the protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure’.
The Green Park, which is due to be completed by the end of this year, aims to “redevelop and enhance public green areas, promote biodiversity, natural capital and the restoration of existing watercourses in line with the Loulé Municipality Climate Action Plan”.
The park will be transformed through actions that include the renaturalisation of the watercourse, increased flood control capacity, enhancement of the natural heritage through the planting of new native trees and shrubs, and the creation of accessible footpaths and cycle paths, and leisure areas.
The ceremony to launch the first tree was attended by representatives from Inframoura, Vilamoura World (the resort’s master planner/developer), CCDR Algarve (regional development commission), Mayor of Loulé Vítor Aleixo, and landscape architect Fernando Pessoa himself.
