One of the Algarve’s closest local election races ended in a victory on Sunday for PS Socialists in Vila Real de Santo António, where current mayor Álvaro Araújo won re-election by just 136 votes.
Araújo received 39.45% of the vote (3,791 votes), only marginally more than the PSD-CDS right-wing coalition (38.03%, 3,655) but significantly ahead of far-right party CHEGA (13.71%, 1,318).
Municipal leadership will be divided into three seats each for PS and PSD-CDS and one for CHEGA.
