Fire classified as ‘contained’ yesterday
The wildfire in Sabrosa, pronounced contained/ dominated yesterday, has sprung back into life again today, in a steep hillside area, propelled by the wind.
Speaking to Lusa, fire brigade commander José Barros assures there are no homes in danger, but the area affected is ‘difficult to access’, which makes firefighting more complicated.
According to Barros, the wind and heat in the region contributed to this flare-up.
According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, at 15:27 there were 122 operatives fighting the blaze, supported by 30 vehicles and six aircraft.
The fire originally broke out at 1.30pm on Wednesday, near the road and an area of pine forest in Feitais. It then descended to Souto Maior, where it put houses at risk, but fortunately the wind changed before any suffered serious damage.
Yesterday, reactivations boosted by the wind were already being reported, but they were able to be dampened.
In an assessment made at 8pm last night, authorities said the entire perimeter of the fire had been controlled and it was “practically in its aftermath”.
Now, all that has changed.
