The seemingly new scourge of ‘hit-and-run’ incidents affecting Portugal has claimed another victim, this time in Manteigadas, Setúbal.
A man described as ‘in his 30s’ was hit by a car in the early hours of yesterday morning, in the Bairro da Bela Vista.
According to tabloid Correio da Manhã, “the driver fled the scene, but according to police sources, the colour, make and model of car has already been confirmed”.
The alert was sounded shortly before 4.30am. By the time authorities reached the scene, there was nothing that could be done to revive the victim.
Death was declared at the scene.
PSP police are now following the considerable leads that they have.
Without confirming CM’s understanding that the car’s details are already known, TVI has said that police expect to settle this case “with great speed”.
This latest hit-and-run follows so many relatively recent others. Only last week, bereaved parents presented a 10,000-strong petition to parliament calling for much tougher sentences on drivers who cause such anguish and appear not to show the minimum of human decency.
