65-year-old arrested after fatal shotgun blasting of older man in Sines

Witnesses say shooting was prompted by a ‘traffic dispute’ near municipal market

A 72-year-old was shot at point blank range today following what has been described as a “traffic dispute” in Sines.

The 65-year-old suspect has been arrested, in possession of the shotgun allegedly used in the shooting.

This was an incident completely unusual for Sines. Both men are described as locals. It may be their dispute extended beyond the niceties of good driving practices. Suffice it to say, the incident played out right next to the town’s municipal market this morning, in full view of horrified passers-by.

According to reports, the victim was in his car. Moments previously he appears to have ‘exchanged words’ with the suspect, who then is alleged to have approached him, pointing the shotgun through the open window.

Jornal de Notícias describes an “indeterminate number” of shots fired, before the slightly younger man fled the scene.

Emergency response personnel desperately tried to resuscitate the victim, but death was declared shortly after their arrival.

Police were able to locate the suspect fairly quickly. He is understood to have offered no resistance. He will now be handed over to PJ police in Setúbal, who will ‘formalise’ the detention for murder.
