Police in Albufeira arrested 16 people during a series of operations carried out between August 29 and September 4.
In a statement to the press, GNR police’s Faro Territorial Command said the actions were aimed at tackling crime and strengthening security across popular Algarve tourist hotspot.
The arrests involved 15 men, aged between 22 and 59, and one woman aged 39. Offences included theft from shops, drug trafficking, drunk driving, driving without a license, domestic violence, serious assault, aggravated threats and insults, and illegal entry and stay in Portugal.
During the operations, police also seized 13 cannabis plants, 11 doses of hashish, packaging material, a mobile phone and more than €1,200 in cash. All 16 people arrested have been named ‘arguidos’ (defendants) and their cases passed to the Albufeira Judicial Court.
The crackdown was backed by officers from the GNR Intervention Unit’s Public Order Group. Despite the arrests, concerns about safety in Albufeira persist: just days later, two young people were stabbed near Rua da Oura in an incident now under investigation by PJ police.
