Local group Algarve pela Palestina (Algarve for Palestine) has announced a series of daily vigils in Faro this month to draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank, with a particular focus on the plight of Palestinian children.
The vigils are scheduled to take place outside the CCDR headquarters in Faro on August 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29, between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
In addition to the daily vigils, the group is planning a larger event in Portimão on August 23 at the Novo Coreto in Portimão, in front of Casa Inglesa, starting at 6pm.
The initiative follows recent reports from United Nations agencies expressing deep concern about the situation of children in Gaza, where access to food, medical care, and safety has been described as severely compromised.
UN data cited by the group points to over 18,000 children killed by Israel since October 7, 2023, while another 39,000 have been orphaned and thousands have been amputated. At least 94 children are also reported to have died of starvation, with the number increasing by the day.
