British couple “loses everything” in fire, but saves dogs

Kelly and Adrien escape with animals, and “just the clothes on their backs”

A very different story to the tragedy in the Alentejo where homeowners left a burning home, with their dog inside on a chain, is the one coming out of Medelim, a little hamlet in the municipality of Penamacor, ravaged by fire.

British couple Kelly and Adrien managed to evacuate to safety, saving all their animals.

The pair take in strays, and abandoned animals, with the knowledge of the local GNR and municipality.

The troop of dogs has been placed with friends/ fosters/ other foreigners rescuing animals, until Kelly and Adrien get back on their feet.

Animal lovers over Facebook have suggested a ‘gofundme’ appeal.

The couple is meantime being helped by the local authority.

Kelly and Adrien are by no means the only foreigners affected by wildfires ripping through the landscape in the north and centre.

Another animal refuge was burnt out on Monday (July 28), with some of the inmates still not found (one parrot/ one coati). A Gofundme appeal (organised by an animal refuge in the Algarve) has managed to collect over €7,000 already, and the plan is that, in this case, the place can be rebuilt.

In the case of Kelly and Adrien, however, ‘rebuilding’ is not an option as the pair lived in a caravan. It may be that they are helped locally to find another one, and start again.
