GNR agent braves burning home to rescue dog on chain

Duque was in “situation of imminent danger”

A young GNR agent has become a local hero after braving the flames of a burning home to release a dog on a chain, facing certain death.

Advice to anyone watching the video below, “have tissues at the ready”

The rescue took place in the Alentejo (Vila Ruiva, municipality of Cuba) on Tuesday.

According to the GNR, the alert went out, and by the time the agent arrived, it was quickly clear that Duque the dog was in “a situation of imminent danger”.

Ignoring advice to stay back, the agent went straight in as others watched in trepidation. Seconds passed and he emerges with a visibly traumatised animal.

Duque was coaxed back from the brink of dehydration/ heat exhaustion and terror, but very sadly he did not make it (see updated story to come). Initially, the information was that he had been reunited with his owners, the people who had left him chained in the first place.

Comments on this heartwarming rescue reveal the agent’s name to be Aragão (last name). A comment from a fellow GNR officer reads: “Everyone wanted the animal to survive, but it was only Agent Aragão’s COURAGE & SENSE OF MISSION that made this possible! Being a member of the GNR goes far beyond wearing a uniform; we wear the soul of being one and we are always there EVERY DAY”.
