Benny’s lesson: please don’t forget senior dogs

Senior dogs are often overlooked, yet they are calm, grateful companions with so much love still to give

This week we lost Benny.

Benny was one of the first residents of the Cadela Carlota shelter, in Lagos, where we are currently based. He grew up with us from a puppy and spent most of his life at the shelter. Then, at the age of 16, he was lucky enough to find a wonderful foster family. Against all odds, he proved that it is never too late for a senior dog to get their chance.

Benny lived until he was 17. His final year was spent the way every dog deserves — in a home, with comfort, care and, above all, love.

Benny leaves us with a very important lesson: a senior dog can still find their family.

Senior dogs are often overlooked, yet they are calm, grateful companions with so much love still to give. Even a short time in a home can change everything for them.

Thank you to the family who welcomed Benny during the last year of his life.

Rest in peace, Benny.

Still waiting for their chance

At the shelter, many older dogs are still waiting for the opportunity Benny received.

Max, aged 11, came to us in June 2024 after his owner had to sell his land in Lagos and could no longer keep him. Max is affectionate, well-behaved and loves people. He enjoys walks, attention and companionship, and would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for a loyal friend.

Zara, aged 10, has lived at the shelter since 2016 after being abandoned as a puppy with her siblings. While the others were adopted, Zara is still waiting. She is calm, loves people and would enjoy a quiet home where she can relax and receive plenty of attention. She would likely be happiest as the only dog in the home.

Both Max and Zara deserve the chance to spend their later years in comfort and security.

Your ideas can make a difference

Alongside rescue work, community support remains essential. A fundraising ideas meeting will take place on April 11, at 3pm, at the Lagos Parish Council meeting room, where volunteers and supporters are invited to share suggestions for future initiatives.

Food collection campaigns will also be held at Continente supermarkets on April 11–12, helping ensure the shelter can continue caring for dogs while they wait for homes.

Through cooperation and compassion, second chances remain possible — just as Benny showed us.
