Animal rescue group IRA – Intervenção e Resgate Animal is planning to open a new operational base in the Algarve to strengthen its response to animal rescue cases in the region.
In a statement shared on its social media pages, the group says its goal is to create a dedicated space to handle rescues and provide shelter for animals recovering from critical situations.
The planned facility will include stables for large animals, structured kennels and a logistics area for vehicles and trailers. All infrastructure will be designed to meet legal requirements and animal welfare standards, IRA states.
However, the organisation says a key element is still missing: land.
IRA is now appealing for help in finding a suitable plot in the Algarve, either through donation or purchase. The land must be large enough for the project and have the necessary legal and planning approval for this type of use.
The group says the centre is intended to become a benchmark for animal shelters in southern Portugal, allowing more animals to be saved and cared for.
Anyone who knows of available land, owners or organisations willing to support the initiative is encouraged to get in touch with IRA (geral@nira.pt).
