Collective dismissal scheduled to take place at Vanpro in October
As many as 475 workers stand to lose their jobs following a change of suppliers by Palmela’s Volkswagen car plant Autoeuropa.
Vanpro – the local company that has made vehicle seats for Autoeuropa for the last three decades – has not been chosen to supply its seats for the new hybrid version of the T-Roc – and as Vanpro’s only client is Autoeuropa, the business faces closure.
It is not certain, however, that all 475 employees will be out of a job. According to negocios online, 125 of them could be incorporated by the company chosen to substitute Vanpro – and the terms of the collective dismissal are being prepared so that workers are properly rewarded for years of service, etc.
Correio da Manhã today suggests that there are “other ways of reducing the number of people to be made unemployed” under discussion, including workers being taken on by Autoeuropa itself, which already employs thousands of people in Palmela.
The reality nonetheless is that the crisis in the automobile sector is being felt in this country, and has already led to a number of factory closures. ND
