Deconstructing Salazar on stage

‘Salazar the Musical’ is part of a new wave of experimental and alternative theatre using a series of sound bites and a deconstructed set.

It will be performed on March 11, 12 and 13 at 4.30pm at the old gallery at São Brás Museum and tells the story of Portugal’s dictator António Oliveira Salazar, who became Prime Minister in 1932. Taking a satirical approach to a menacing subject by using musical interludes, a troubadour narrates this dark period of Portuguese history. Set movers with minimal furniture and props are on stage throughout the show and joined by actors recreate the public face of Salazar and his clandestine private life.

A Lantern Ball held during Portugal’s World Exhibition in 1940 is a high point of the production with the actors beautifully costumed everyone carrying a lamp or light.  Today little reference is ever made to the exhibition but at the time it was a huge event that attracted three million visitors and marked the climax of Salazar’s popularity.  Pavilions, restaurants and show pieces were lined along the River Tagus. While the rest of the world was embroiled in World War II, Portugal was basking in the glory of its current achievements, its illustrious past and the successful governance of its colonies.

In this scene, the entire cast includes a composite of characters from across Europe all of them fleeing from the Nazis. Their journeys are based on fact and told in rhyme. Relieved to have reached the safety of Portugal their predictions take an unexpected and sinister turn with a musical ending that refers to the future of Salazar’s dictatorship. Parallels to the world of today frequently come to mind.

‘Salazar the Musical. The Rise of a Dictator’ is written and directed by Carolyn Kain and performed by The Random Players.

Tickets cost €12 for Amigos do Museu de São Brás and €15 for the general public.
